GREEN GARDENING IS HERE TO STAY
MAC Events 6th annual New Jersey Flower and Garden Show presents eco-friendly speaker roster
SPRING LAKE, NJ—It sometimes seems as if the environmental problems in the world are huge, and the positive impact that we can make as individuals is minute. Water pollution, species extinction, climate change…the list is enough to make you want to go hide in your garden. Happily, the garden is the one place where you can make an immediate and positive contribution to the health of the planet. As in other aspects of our lives, we can take action in our landscaping efforts that promote energy and water conservation, while reducing pollution levels, landfill waste and dangerous use of synthetic pesticides. Once considered ground-breaking, the following eco-friendly practices are now common for example: using push mowers which are muscle powered and promote both energy conservation and clean air. Composting, which has many plusses beyond its’ ability to naturally fertilize plants, such as soil aeration and water retention. Companion planting, based on the idea that certain plants, such as the African marigold planted near garden crops, will benefit others when planted in near proximity. This practice is a great “natural” way to control pests. These and a host of other green gardening methods will be discussed at the 6th Annual New Jersey Flower and Garden Show which will be held from February 14-17, 2008 at the New Jersey Convention Center, Raritan Center in Edison, New Jersey.
“We are big proponents of keeping the Garden State Green and are proud to present the following roster of speakers that include nationally lauded gardening pros and landscape professionals all of whom are dedicated to green gardening and working hand in hand with the natural world,” said James B. McLaughlin, president of MAC Events, the shows’ producer.
Paul Tukey, recently named America’s 2006 Gardening Communicator of the Year, will conduct a lively discussion of the “dos” and “don’ts” of lawn care, followed by a book signing of his best-selling new release, The Organic Lawn Care Manual. Paul is on a national campaign to educate consumers about natural lawn care alternatives, including organic fertilizers, weed killers, biological pest controls, water conservation and environmentally friendly turf grasses. He is the founder of SafeLawns.org, an international coalition of organizations prompting environmentally friendly lawn care and resource conservation and is well known to millions of Americans through his popular gardening program People, Places and Plants on HGTV and through his magazine of the same name.
Also appearing each day of the show will be Ralph Snodsmith, host of the nationally syndicated radio show The Garden Hotline. Since 1965 when he learned the differences between “roots and shoots” at the University of Illinois, he has served as Executive Director of the Queens Botanical Garden, served as gardnering editor on Good Morning America and has educated millions of Americans about plants and their proper care. Ralph is the author of many books including The Tri-State Gardener’s Guide and Tips from the Garden Hotline. He will share his latest picks on the best organic gardening products and green gardening tips.

Joe Lamp’l will bring his fresh, enthusiastic, inspirational, and charismatic personality to center stage where he will discuss his latest book, Over the Fence with joe gardener®, which devotes much of its’ content to the all important “why-do” behind the “how-to” of gardening.
