Show will emphasize eco-friendly gardening techniques
SPRING LAKE, NJ—This is the time of year when all good gardeners curl up by the fire or snuggle under the blankets with their garden catalogs and dream of what spring will bring. Next month they will awaken from their reverie as they enter the doors of the New Jersey Convention Center and are immediately enveloped in the tantalizing sights and scents of thousands of colorful blooming plants at the 6th annual New Jersey Flower and Garden Show. We all know that it’s “in” to be “out” and this year, the theme of the show is “The Entertaining Garden – Party among the Petals” and the full scale display gardens are sure to get you in the mood for some serious outdoor living. Here’s a snapshot of what visitors will see:
The Games People Play: RU Game?
The garden should not only be a source of relaxation, but also fun!! Designed and built by Rutgers University students at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, this display will feature a number of outdoor games and entertainment ideas for a family. Entertainment will include checkers, hopscotch, vertical water trough fountains, and an interactive tic-tac-toe-fountain. The garden will also promote sustainable and environmentally friendly details, such as a Green Wall, recycled rainwater, point of use irrigation and soaker hoses, bamboo for CO2 encapsulation and a planting design featuring plants with reduced water needs.
Backyard Bliss
Enjoy a life of bliss in a backyard garden complete with an in-ground pool and surrounding patio. Life is easy with an outdoor kitchen! While you are cooking, guests can relax next to the fire pit toasting marshmallows or unwinding with a cocktail. Designed by Frank Sarcona and Frank Perkins of Brick, New Jersey.
You’re Invited to a Martini Party!
Jay Eriv and the staff of GROUNDS KEEPER of Matawan, New Jersey invite you to join them for four days of great music and cocktails in a fun and funky atmosphere. Their garden will have two water features, blue stone patios, painted pergolas and fireplace which will provide a sleek and private space for all who attends. See if you can identify the wide variety of plants chosen to complement the architectural elements of the garden.
Art of Outdoor Living
Richard Snediker of Growing Concern in Cranbury, New Jersey knows that there is an art to outdoor living and his garden will take visitors on the journey of reflection and relaxation. Wave your way through a patio with fountains and exotic plants to recline under a pergola. The outdoor kitchen will help you develop the art of cooking which your and your guests enjoy the sounds of summer surrounded by picturesque plantings.
Entertaining in a Jersey Fresh Garden
Bill Brash and his colleagues at the New Jersey Conservation Partnership will present a quaint setting boasting a bounty of New Jersey Fresh produce and flora where one can take pleasure in a three-season patio. The use of drip irrigation and integrated pest management makes this garden a conservation haven.
Backyard Hot Spot! Cool Place!
After a long cold winter, come and enjoy the warm summer breezes in our backyard hot spot, cool place. Trent Fatla of C&M Landscaping will demonstrate their landscape design and construction skills in creating a garden retreat for family and friends. The focal point will be a water garden off the main patio, surrounded by lush plantings.
The Good Life
Start the “good life” while you sit under a pergola and gaze at the sculptures in a garden of boxwood, ivy, hydrangea, tulips, daffodils and much more at this garden designed by Ehrich and Ehrich Landscape Architects of Cranbury, New Jersey. Two separate seating areas with a water feature with low voltage lighting and mirrors will create an alluring and romantic affect. Look for a surprise element to elevate the good life.
In keeping with that theme of the show, the Garden Club of New Jersey will present their standard flower show entitled, “Entertaining All Around the World.” Participants will be asked to design arrangements in the manner of European Ambiance, Asian Flair and American Heritage and others will be eligible for a table Artistry award with themes such as “Relaxing on the Patio”, “Dining on the Deck” and “Join Me on the Porch”. Youth Division ribbons will be awarded for floral creations on the themes, “Party at the Amusement Park”, Circus Circus, “Let the Good Time Roll” and “Happy Birthday to You.”
New this year, Ms. Yoko Ikura and her students will present one life sized and several smaller displays of Sogetsu Ikebana – a three dimensional artistic expression composed of flower and plant materials arranged in a vase. Although Sogestu Ikegana derives from Japanese tradition, it is now blooming all over the world as a sculptural art form. The origin of ikebana stems from the offering of flowers to the Buddha. Another view is that customs of ancient times, such as putting up evergreen trees and arranging flowers to call the spirits developed into ikebana. Today there are over three hundred
schools of ikebana in Japan with many overseas branches including the one in New York where Ms. Ikura teaches and practices the art.
On Friday, February 15th – the second day of our show will be GO GREENER! Day – dedicated to living an eco-friendly life –both in and out of the garden. Speakers, seminars, hands-on activities and displays will give visitors the tools needed to be on the cutting edge of sustainable gardening and environmentally responsible living. Don’t miss the marketplace offering everything from orchids, rare plants, bronze, marble, iron and stone gardens urns and fountains, and botanical art, to the newest gardening gloves and tools. Sips wine from Balic Winery and nibble on Cabot Cheese on Valentine’s Day and enjoy two-for- one admission after 5 p.m. each day.
