On The Go With An Easy Tow

Friday, November 3, 2006

RVing doesn’t have to mean hauling with a big rig up front. Visitors to the 9th Annual Rhode Island RV/Camping Show, Oct 20 - 22, 2006, Rhode Island Convention Center
Providence, RI, will discover that lite weights----travel trailers and camping trailers----provide an easy tow.

Attendees will be able to choose from a variety of folding camping trailers and larger travel trailers, each with important features.

Wanna know why? Consider what many RV dealers say.

The popularity of lite weights is influenced, in part, by the ban many communities place on residential parking of large RVs, unless they are garage-able. So some lite weights and folding camping trailers are garage-able – likely saving hundreds of dollars each year in storage fees, maintenance costs, and lost resale value.

Heavier travel trailers---necessary to some RVers----nevertheless require larger tow vehicles with low fuel efficiency – an expense that’s incurred even when not towing. Lite weight trailers and folding camping trailers can be towed by smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles.

Also, large tow vehicle and travel trailer combinations can be difficult and time consuming to maneuver into many campsites – especially secluded or more natural sites. By contrast, some lite weight trailers, which are shorter overall and therefore more easily maneuvered, expand for considerably more living room.

And the big news is that today’s folding camping trailers offer large comfortable sleeping areas to private bathrooms and complete kitchens, from inside entertainment to outside cooking.

Jim Flagg, Flagg RV Center, 66 West Boylston Street, West Boylston, MA, pointed to
the Jayco Jay Feather Sport, billed as the nation’s number 1 lite weight travel trailer. It features a 3-burner range with 9000-BTU SuperBurner and piezo igniter, a range hood with light and exhaust fan and an oversized oven, a 5-cubic foot flush-mount refrigerator, sink/cutting board cover, high-rise mixing faucet and a microwave oven with carousel.

Flagg also noted that Jayco makes the Jayco Jay Series of folding trailers. “Easily pulled by standard autos and SUVs,” said Flagg, “these ‘pop ups,’ as they are often called, are amazing well equipped.”

Flagg mentioned that standard equipment includes coordinated furniture, a dinette, a 6-gallon water heater, stainless steel sink and faucet, stainless steel carryout stove, 20-pound propane gas bottle, an outside shower, a hookup for city water, 12V electrical system with 20-amp. 110V converter, a 17-gallon fresh water system with 12V demand pump, a Porta-potti storage cabinet and a 2-cubic foot 3-way gas/electric refrigerator.

Show attendees must be sure to check out the Gulf Stream line of lite weight trailers brought by Leo Rousseau, Rousseau's RV Center, Bedford St. Junction Rtes. 18 and 79, Lakeville, MA.

Among Gulf Stream’s models is the StreamLite, about which Rousseau said, “This line features more interior and exterior storage than ever before, deeper split kitchen sinks with cutting board/covers, entertainment shelf positioned for maximum visibility, additional overhead storage compartments, spacious floor plan designs and an updated residential decor just to name a few of the 50+ updates to this 8-foot ultra lightweight travel trailer.”

Rousseau backed up his comments by noting that Streamlite models range in weight from 1,790 pounds to 2,200 pounds.

Also bringing lite weights to the show is Fernando Oliveira, Marty's U.S.R.V., Inc., 71 County Street, Berkley, MA. Oliveira commented on the McKenzie StarLite model.

“McKenzie uses modern race car technology to bring you towing ease and stability,” he explained. “The enclosed chassis is clear of the exposed holding tanks, cross members and outriggers that create turbulence when the trailer is towed. Airflow is smooth and drag is greatly reduced. Towing a StarLite is a breeze.”

Adding to the argument for lite weights is Mark Donilan, Arlington RV Super Center, Inc., 966 Quaker Lane, East Greenwich, RI. Donilan commented about Forest River’s Flagstaff line.

“Lightweight travel trailers have grown very popular in recent years for one reason . . . they simply make sense. No longer is it necessary to invest in a gas-guzzling tow vehicle to enjoy a retreat! In fact, many of the minivans, SUVs and small V-8s you drive everyday will easily tow a Flagstaff! Flagstaff utilizes construction techniques that greatly reduce weight while providing incredible durability and strength. In addition, aerodynamics, low centers of gravity and independent torsion ride suspension ensures superior towing and tracking. It all adds up to an enjoyable, carefree adventure.”

Expanding on this theme Donilan added, “Whatever you like to do on your vacation, you'll enjoy Flagstaff's first rate accommodations. Our Super Lite travel trailers are roomy and beautiful with all the convenient features a vacationing family wants. After all, it's a time of rest and relaxation, and Flagstaff makes sure that it is. These fun inspired units are designed with family-friendly features to enhance your time together, yet they are value priced to fit your budget.”

So go lightly to the 9th Annual Rhode Island RV/Camping Show, Oct 20 - 22, 2006, Rhode Island Convention Center, Providence, RI, and check out how easily you can be an RVer on the go without the big tow.

The 9th Annual Fall Rhode Island RV Show will be open Friday, Oct. 20, from 1:00-to-9:00 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
