Hitting the Road in Comfort: Fall Rhode Island RV Show Illustrates
Friday, November 3, 2006
Show opens Oct. 20 with hundreds of RVs from 50 top manufacturers
PROVIDENCE, RI – The 9th Annual Fall Rhode Island RV Show will feature many of the new 2007 motorhome models that enable families to take the comforts of home on the road with them. The show starts its three-day run Oct. 20 at the Rhode Island Convention Center, Providence, RI.
“You will even find motorhomes designed to let you take your family and your Harley Davidson on vacation at the Fall Rhode Island RV Show,” said show director James McLaughlin, President of MAC Events, the show’s producer. “This show will give RV enthusiasts a first look at many of the new 2007 models and New England’s top dealers will be offering incentives on their remaining 2006 RVs to make room for the new inventory.”
The show covers everything from inexpensive pop-up camping trailers, travel trailers and fifth wheels to luxury diesel-pusher motorhomes and park models. It features RVs from approximately 50 manufacturers including Jayco, Monaco, Canterbury, Crossroads, National Layton, Beaver, Airstream, Fleetwood and Winnebago and many others. Booth exhibitors cover every conceivable accessory as well a full range of services, including finance and insurance companies, and campgrounds from throughout the East Coast.
In addition to the latest motorhomes designed to get better gas mileage while providing enhanced comforts, the Fall Rhode Island RV Show will feature travel trailers built of lightweight materials that can be towed by a sport utility vehicle or small pickup.
“Industry studies this year have found that even with higher gas prices, RVers continue to take to the road, although they are planning trips closer to home or with longer stays in individual campgrounds,” McLaughlin said.
Flagg RV Centers, with locations in North Smithfield, RI, and West Boylston, MA, will exhibit all new 2007 models including the new Outlaw Class A toy-hauler by Damon.
“This is a toy-hauler with plenty of room for creature comforts,” said Steve Flagg, president of the North Smithfield RV Center. “It has a full slideout and while most toy-haulers don’t have room for sleeping quarters in the back the Outlaw has a rear bedroom and is priced $50,000 less than its closest competitor. It’s basically a class A motorhome plus a toy-hauler for an MSRP of $109,900.”
The Outlaw comes with leveling jacks, backup camera, a huge ramp gate with fully assisted spring handle as well as heated holding tanks for year round use. With room to sleep a family of six, the 2007 Outlaw sits on a workhorse chassis with a 340 hp engine and an Allison transmission.
“This RV is going to be very popular with families that do motorcross, the Harley Davidson crew, people with ATVs and people who are into snowmobiles,” Flagg said.
Flagg RV will exhibit the new Tropical motorhome by National with a 300 hp diesel and unbelievable price of $129,900. Flagg also will unveil the new Kodiak from Jayco, which Steve Flagg calls “the ultimate super C” Class C gasoline motorhome with 10,000-pound towing capacity. “It’s basically a class A floor plan with a class C chassis,” he said. McLaughlin said the Fall Rhode Island RV Show is a great opportunity to plan future vacations and find campgrounds that accommodate your lifestyle and travel plans.
With more than 16,000 campgrounds nationwide, RVers have the flexibility to save fuel and reduce travel times by staying closer to home. In a recent survey 45 percent said they were reducing the distances they travel while 52% reported they are spending more time in one place, according to the RVIA, which represents the manufacturers of more than 95% of the RVs made in the US. (See highlights of study attached.)
“This latest research confirms what we found in the survey during the summer of 2005 — higher gas prices won’t stop RVers from traveling, but they will make adjustments,” said Richard Coon, president of RVIA.
The 9th Annual Fall Rhode Island RV Show will be open Friday, Oct. 20, from 1:00-to-9:00 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

RVIA Campfire Canvass Highlights
(Biannual survey of RV owners released in May 2006)
Almost 70 percent of RVers planned to be on the road during the summer holidays of Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
Camping is the favorite activity families will enjoy during their upcoming RV trips. Taking scenic drives (72 percent) and hiking/walking (67 percent) also ranked high on the list of favorite activities of RVing families.
Sitting around the campfire at RV parks and campgrounds does more than take the chill out of the night air. Eighty percent said RVing strengthens family bonds. Nearly 73 percent said that going RVing has resulted in a closer relationship with their spouse.
More than half of all RVers also said they’d enjoy outdoor activities and sports. In fact, two-thirds of the respondents said they are more physically active on RV trips than on other vacations.
Ninety-one percent of respondents said their RVs would allow them to take more weekend trips or mini-vacations this summer. This is ideal for busy families looking for ways to accommodate their hectic everyday schedules with a balance of fun, physical activity and freedom.
