THE FISHERMAN SEMINARS---A TRADITION THAT GROWS BETTER WITH TIME
Like cheese or wine that seem grander with time, the free fishing seminars hosted by The Fisherman magazine just get better and better. This year’s lineup of informative and entertaining chats are proof. Check out this list and make time in your schedule at the show for an incomparable taste treat---and it’s all free.
Events kick off on Thursday, February 21, when at 2 p.m. NEW JERSEY LUNKERS will be tackle by JB Kasper, Fisherman Field Editor. Kasper has been fishing the Big D for so long many fish call him uncle. However, this time around the freshwater specialist and author shares his take on fishing many New Jersey's top largemouth bass lakes.
At 3 p.m. on Thursday, the NJ BOATERS’ TEST-OUT EXAM will be administered by Capt. Russ Binns, Coast Boating School. Following successful completion of this 50-question exam, boaters will be legally allowed to operate a power vessel in New Jersey. Cost, mandated by New Jersey law, is $25.
Next, at 4 p.m., SURF FISHING THE SPRING RUN will be presented by D.J. “Doc” Muller, author of "The Surfcaster’s Guide to the Striper Coast" and Fisherman Magazine contributor. Doc will reveal what you need to know to be ready to hit the beach when the striped bass come your way.
BETTER BOAT HANDLING AROUND STRUCTURE is on tap at 6 p.m. when Capt. Alex Majewski, Lighthouse Sportfishing, discusses his tips and tricks for better success around rips and jetties.
And at 7 p.m. on Thursday, the NJ BOATERS’ TEST-OUT EXAM will again be administered by Capt. Russ Binns, Coast Boating School. As earlier, successful completion of this 50-question exam will enable boaters to legally operate a power vessel in New Jersey. Cost, mandated by New Jersey law, is $25.
Exciting information continues on Friday, February 22 when, at 2 p.m., the NJ BOATERS’ TEST-OUT EXAM is administered a third time by Capt. Russ Binns, Coast Boating School. And, yes, following successful completion of this 50-question exam, boaters will be legally allowed to operate a power vessel in New Jersey. Cost, mandated by New Jersey law, is $25.
Ok, get ready to harvest bait because at 3 p.m., CAST-NETTING and LIVE BAIT ESSENTIALS will be covered by Charlie Kay, East Coast Nets who will discuss how to find bait, properly cast a net and keep your catch fresh.
Stripers move to center stage at 4 p.m. when Capt. Brian Rice, Jersey Devil Charters, discusses STRIPERS, TOURNAMENT-STYLE. He’ll revel tips to improve one’s tournament success along the ASA and FLW Striper Series circuits in 2008.
More linesider action erupts at 6 p.m.. If you’re WIRED FOR STRIPERS, you’ll want to hear Capt. Gene Nigro, Phantom Sportfishing, explain how to get down deep for wireline striped bass.
And at 6 p.m. SLAMMIN’ RARITAN BAY is the topic when Capt. Fred Gamboa, Andreas’ Toy Charters, Pro Staff Shimano and Contender Boats, talks about stripers, blues, weakfish and fluke all in one trip! If you don’t believe it, just sit in and hold on as he tells how to score them all on Raritan Bay.

Saturday, February 23, is CAPTAINS’ DAY. It launches at 10:15 a.m. with yet another sitting for the NJ BOATERS’ TEST-OUT EXAM administered by Capt. Russ Binns, Coast Boating School. Following successful completion of this 50-question exam, boaters will be legally allowed to operate a power vessel in New Jersey. Cost, mandated by New Jersey law, is $25.
Then at 11 a.m. OBTAINING A USCG LICENSE will be covered by Capt. John Henderson, Mariners School. He’ll discuss how to obtain an USCG license and get started with a business on the water.
At high noon it’s time for CHUNKING STRIPERS with Capt. Sal Cursi, Cathy Sea Charters. He’ll take the audience through chunking bunker for Raritan Bay stripers, finding bait, to reeling in the bass. Master net maker Percy Wentworth also will be on hand to load you up with bait.
2 p.m. will see SLAMMIN’ RARITAN BAY repeated as Capt. Fred Gamboa, Andreas’ Toy Charters, Pro Staff Shimano and Contender Boats, speaks again about scoring stripers, blues, weakfish and fluke all in one trip. Find out how to do it all on Raritan Bay.
It’s party time at 3 p.m. when HAVING A TUNA PARTY is the topic with Capt. Greg Markert, Golden Eagle. He’ll explain why an offshore party boat trip can be an effective way for the average angler to get in on the tuna action.
At 4 p.m. BASS, BUCKTAILS & COLD, HARD METAL will take center stage when Capt. Chris Gatley, Ardent Angler Sportfishing, Fisherman Field Editor and Shimano Pro Staff, discusses getting ready for a kick down, drag out fight while ratcheting up your striper score on jigs this season.
5 p.m. is HITTING THE HUDSON time with Capt. Ralph Roth, Weigh Point Sportfishing. He’ll review why the once-abandoned river is now a haven for some of the best striper fishing around.
At 6 p.m. the session is IN THE BLACK with Capt. Ken Gallop, Big Kid Sportfishing. He’ll reveal tips and tricks for catching your limit of big, tasty blackfish.
7 p.m. is time once again for the NJ BOATERS’ TEST-OUT EXAM administered by Capt. Russ Binns, Coast Boating School. Following successful completion of this 50-question exam, boaters will be legally allowed to operate a power vessel in New Jersey. Cost, mandated by New Jersey law, is $25.
At 11 a.m. on Sunday, February 24, attention again focuses on the NJ BOATERS’ TEST-OUT EXAM administered by Capt. Russ Binns, Coast Boating School. Following successful completion of this 50-question exam, boaters will be legally allowed to operate a power vessel in New Jersey. Cost, mandated by New Jersey law, is $25.
At noon, SMALL BOAT SHARK FISHING rolls out when Jeff Merrill, Fisherman Field Editor St. Croix and Costa Del Mar Pro Staff , discusses tactics to safely land big sharks from a smaller platform.
1 p.m. is the time for TIDAL RIVER FLUKE, a talk by Don Kamienski, author of "Fishing For Fluke" and Fisherman Field Editor. He’ll review how to catch a near-limit of fluke in any tidal river in the state when the ocean is either too cold or too rough.
Then at 2 p.m. Milt Rosko tackles SPRING KICKOFF, BAY-STYLE. This Fisherman Magazine contributor and noted author, considered one of New Jersey’s most recognizable anglers, tells how to work the early season bay bite from the Raritan to the Barnegat.
