CAMPERS TO $1 MILLION LUXURY MOTORHOMES

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Whether you are looking for an inexpensive camper to introduce the kids to nature or a high-end diesel pusher motorhome to take to the road in luxury, more than 350 RVs await your discovery during MAC Events 13th Annual Atlantic City RV & Camping Show March 14 through March 16 in the Convention Center.

“This is a huge indoor RV show with more than 90 RV brands represented,” said show director James McLaughlin, president of MAC Events. “With a selection this large, consumers will find model choices no matter what their RV needs or budget.”

The show also features a big selection of booth exhibitors selling every conceivable recreational vehicle accessory and service, including insurance and finance companies, to accommodate your travel plans.

The exhibitors include dozens of campgrounds from throughout the East Coast with representatives available to help you plan your RV odyssey.

“This show is as much about lifestyle as it is about RV models,” McLaughlin said.

The Atlantic City RV & Camping Show draws leading dealers from throughout New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania and covers everything from inexpensive pop-up camping trailers, travel trailers and fifth wheels to luxury diesel-pusher motorhomes, toy-haulers and park models. RV manufacturers represented at the show include Jayco, Monaco, Canterbury, Crossroads, National, Layton, Beaver, Airstream, Fleetwood, Winnebago, Dynamax, Air Stream, Expitition, Itasca, Lance, Starcraft, Forest River, Dutchman, Kropf and many others.

The show includes many new 2008 models as well as leftovers that dealers are offering at significant discounts in order to make room in their showrooms for new models this spring.

“Show visitors can tour and compare more RVs in a few hours at the show than they could in a week of visiting dealerships,” the show director said, “and still have time to hit the casinos, take in a show or enjoy one of Atlantic City’s many fine restaurants.”

The show features Country Coach motorhomes built on the Dynamax chassis and ranging from $300,000 to $1.3 million depending on the size and level of amenities.

“County Coach appeals to a broad range of consumers but is particularly popular among more experienced RVers,” said Jimmy Krail, a salesman for Cartec Motors of Bordentown. Cartec also will exhibit Tiffin motorhomes and Silver Crown Class C motorhomes built on a Freightliner chassis.

“You name the amenity and Country Coach offers it,” Krail said. “From the choice of a Cat and Cummins engine to solid wood cabinets and heated floors, if you can find it in an RV you’ll find it in a Country Coach.”

Cartec also will show the Tiffin Phaeton, the best-selling diesel pusher in America in its price range, according to Krail. With solid wood cabinets, Corian countertops, full ceramic tile floors throughout and a queen-or king-size bed, the Phaeton ranges from $200,000 to $250,000 depending on the size of the model and trim level.

Crossroad Trailer Sales of Newfield will exhibit Cedar Creek travel trailers and fifth wheels including its hottest new model, the 36L5S.

“The 36L5S has two entry doors, five slide outs and one-and one-half baths,” according to Cartec’s Dina Hurley, who notes that the exhibit also will include RVs by Salem, Sierra and Heartland. “People visiting our two rows of RVs will find everything from entry level to high-end of travel trailers and fifth wheels.”

“The 36L5S is a fifth wheel for people who want a higher-end trailer with a lot of amenities but also need lots of bunks. We also will exhibit Cedar Creek’s 35-foot model, which is very popular with couples and people that don’t need as much bunk space,” Hurley said.

The smaller Cedar Creek model has three slide outs, a fireplace and a full entertainment center in the rear.

McLaughlin, the show director, said dealers in MAC Events January RV & Camping Show in Edison reported strong show sales, driven by younger buyers and families seeking value and cost-efficiency in their vacations.

“One industry study found that families can reduce their vacation costs by 26 to 74 percent traveling by RV compared to other types of vacations,” McLaughlin said, citing a 2006 report by travel and tourism research firm PKF Consulting. “Even when fuel prices increase, RVing remains the least expensive mode of travel.”

Another recent RV industry study performed to gauge the impact of increasing fuel costs found RV enthusiasts had not decreased the amount of time they spend traveling but are taking shorter trips and staying longer in resorts instead.

“In times of high fuel prices, RVers tend to spend more time enjoying the campground and less on the road,” said Richard Coon, president of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, which includes more than 90 percent of the RV manufacturers and parts suppliers in America. “Whether they travel five miles or 500, their outdoor experience can be the same.”

Nearly 9 percent of U.S. households headed by 35-to-54 year olds now own an RV, which is slightly higher than the 8.6 percent ownership rates of those 55 and over, according to the RVIA. People under age 35 have posted the largest gains in RV ownership for the past five years.
One in 12 U.S. vehicle-owning households – almost 8 million - now own an RV.
