THE GARDEN STATE HOME SHOW WAS LAUNCHED IN 1989

Thursday, January 24, 2008

1989…That Was Then

When the Garden State Home show debuted in 1989, it was a time for budding baby boomers to play videogames, subscribe to cable TV and add personal computers, complete with just introduced Microsoft Office software. New homes, priced around $120,000, were two-story, split level or condominiums and ranged in size from 1,200 to 2,800 square feet. A gallon of gas cost 97 cents and postage stamps were 25 cents!

Visitors to that first Garden State Home Show were delighted to discover a plethora of possibilities for improving their homes inside and out. They saw fireplaces, wet bars, air conditioning systems and lighting options to complement vaulted ceilings. First-floor laundries, formal living and dining rooms and master suites were among trends presented. Front doors of glass, closets to walk in and garage doors that opened electrically tantalized home show viewers.

Subtle shades of carpeting, such as tan, ivory, light blue or soft green and new hardwoods were popular among floor covering exhibitors. Booths showing entertainment options featured shelves constructed from man-made materials designed to hold CD players, tape decks, stereos, amplifiers, speakers and television sets. Waveless waterbeds drew oohs and aahs from young couples and older homeowners loved solid hardwood furniture. Those on tighter budgets were pleased with contemporary furnishings fabricated from man-made materials.

Landscape designers dazzled exhibit guests with courtyards and gazebos. Sliding doors added style and ease to patio entries. Elegance was the key for entryway boasting trellises. Garden centers offered tips on how to beautify home perimeters with flowers and beds of annuals and perennials.

2008…This Is Now

Doug Wilson star of TLC’s hit show Moving Up will make his appearance at the Garden State Home Show on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The popular Garden State Home show has grown to more than 250 exhibitors. Many of the nearly 200 companies will join hundreds of others to showcase the finest home improvement products and services in Central New Jersey. Trends of the 21st century are wrapped around good taste, rapidly changing technology and family commitment. See how the home has evolved and learn ways to make it a finely tuned sanctuary.

For example, kitchens were always an important room. Now, as the heart of the home, this gathering spot is streamlined and multifunctional. Cabinets, floors and lighting are richly styled with the panache found in sophisticated living areas. Clever little hideaways conceal frequently used appliances and two dishwashers are a must to cut clean-up time in half for busy entertainers.

Wonderful, sensual spas, aquariums, home gyms and full-service bars are sure to attract attention at the show. No maintenance resort-like pools and guaranteed-for-life hardscaped patios, driveways and retaining walls are modern wonders that allow more time for fun.

In fact, the Garden State Home Show is all about making your home a cost-effective joy. Professionals will share secrets of storage and organization or how to expand rooms without adding square footage. Stroll down aisles replete with energy-efficient windows, doors and heating and cooling systems. Meet with deck builders, remodeling contractors and kitchen and bath designers. Take a tip or two from drapery and window treatment experts and decorative painting artisans. Experience entertainment theaters that arouse the senses and heighten family pleasure.
