The big ones---Class A motorhomes---will roll out big time at the big show---the 13th Annual Fall Atlantic City RV Show, Oct 27 - 29, 2006, Atlantic City Convention Center, Atlantic City, NJ.

A fascinating array of gasoline and diesel powered motorhomes will be available for close inspection at this buyers’ show where deals highlight the action.

Motorhomes offer a variety of opportunities for RVing all year long, actually. With air conditioners and furnaces, they can go anywhere in the country, seasons not mattering.

John Lanzo from Colonial Airstream noted that motorhome travelers are surrounded by home comforts in units equipped with comfortable living, dining, sleeping and bathroom facilities. Modern kitchens help older RVers follow special diets and avoid high-priced restaurants and hotels.

“With ranges and oven plus a microwave, RVers can dine in their own ‘five star’ eatery---doing it their way,” said Lanzo.

So, what are your travel plans? Weekends in the mountains beside a crystal clear lake or on the coast by the roaring surf? Do your plans include extended cross-country trips or how about a two-week trek into the high country?

Another important amenity is space, always a concern for large families. Motorhomes have multiple slideout sections that greatly expand livable space at the touch of a button.

Slideouts have become so popular that it’s virtually impossible to consider a motorhome without them.

Also, studies have shown that family RV vacations are more affordable than travel by personal car, train, airline, or cruise ship.

However, many motorhome buyers use their big rigs as a second home for extended time away during winter months, for example. Truly the intangibles of the RV culture have long had a hold on the imagination, and the current generation of buyers is no different. Romantic notions of hitting the open road in an RV have figured in movies from 1954's 'The Long, Long Trailer" (starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) to 1985's 'Lost in America" (starring Albert Brooks).

Yet the end of the road also holds strong appeal. Long stays in warm climes or a haul to the Pacific Northwest for an extended tour of that coastline are what the big ones are exceptionally good at.

The statistics about RV ownership are revealing. Since 2001, the number of RV owners between ages 35 and 54 grew by 11 percent, from 3.5 million to 3.9 million. The number of owners younger than 35 grew by 18 percent, from 850,000 to 1 million. The number of owners among the 55-and-older crowd grew by 20 percent, from 2.5 million to 3 million, but some of that increase may be attributed to the fact that that age group is growing in size as people live longer, according to economist Richard Curtin, director of the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers.
